Garrett Richards is a pitcher in the MLB who is currently a free agent. He attended Edmond Memorial High School in Oklahoma, where he had a successful career as a pitcher. His best season came in 2005 when his team won the regional championship and he pitched with a 2.97 earned run average and finished the year 8-5. Richards went undrafted after high school and attended the University of Oklahoma, playing baseball for the Sooners. 

 

In college, Richards recorded nine saves his freshman year, the fourth most in school history. In 2009, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 42nd overall. He made his professional debut at the Rookie level with Orem, finishing 3-1 with an impressive 1.53 ERA. He was a Midwest League Allstar in 2010, and then in 2011 played with Double-A Arkansas, going 12-2 and earning a Texas League All-Star selection. 

 

In 2014, Richards had strong showing in the Major Leagues. On June 4th, Richards pitched a perfect inning against the Houston Astros, striking out 3 batters in order on nine pitches. He was selected as a final vote nominee to the 2014 All-Star Game. In August, he pitched his first career shutout against the LA Dodgers. Between then and 2018, he struggled with injuries, but in December of 2018 he signed a two-year deal with the San Diego Padres, pitching in the 2020 playoffs. He currently is a free agent.
